{"id":2996,"date":"2018-10-26T07:18:14","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lynxee.consulting\/?p=2996\/"},"modified":"2023-01-26T15:45:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T15:45:29","slug":"europe-publication-of-the-technical-guidelines-for-determining-the-magnitude-of-residues-and-setting-mrl-in-honey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lynxee.consulting\/en\/europe-publication-of-the-technical-guidelines-for-determining-the-magnitude-of-residues-and-setting-mrl-in-honey\/","title":{"rendered":"EUROPE: Publication of the Technical Guidelines for Determining the Magnitude of Residues and Setting MRL in Honey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Endorsed at the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF meeting) of 18-19 September 2018, the <b>final version<\/b> of technical guidelines for determining the magnitude of pesticide residues in honey and setting Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) in honey is <b>now available<\/b> (SANTE\/11956\/2016 rev. 9).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After some considerations on the residue definition for risk assessment and enforcement in honey, the guidance document provides a <b>decision-making scheme<\/b> as regards the type of experimental data required and MRL setting in honey. <b>Other bee products<\/b> (such as pollen, royal jelly, propolis, <em>etc.<\/em>) are <b>excluded<\/b> from the decision-making scheme as the consumption of these products by European consumers is considered negligible. Therefore there is no need to generate experimental residue data for such commodities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The guidance states that the <b>residue definition<\/b> in honey should cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">the <b>components<\/b> included in the residue definition <b>in<\/b> <b>primary crops<\/b>,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">the <b>degradations products<\/b> formed during <b>pasteurisation<\/b> conditions, and<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">the <b>components<\/b> included in the residue definition <b>in<\/b> <b>rotational crops<\/b> (<em>i.e.<\/em> persistent compounds that can be taken up by plants from the soil).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The proposed decision-making scheme can be summarised as follow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">In case of <b>no residues <\/b>expected (<em>e.g.<\/em> application outside flowering and no persistence) <b>or<\/b> in case of <b>low residue<\/b> <b>amounts<\/b> <b>in aerial crop parts<\/b>, <em>i.e.<\/em> <b>&lt;0.05 mg\/kg<\/b>, the <b>default MRL<\/b> is set at <b>0.05 mg\/kg (or at LOQ)<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">In case of <b>residues<\/b> <b>in aerial crop parts \u22650.05 mg\/kg and &lt;0.5 mg\/kg<\/b>, the <b>MRL<\/b> is <b>derived from<\/b> the <b>highest measured residue<\/b> in aerial crop part.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">In case of <b>residue in aerial crop parts \u22650.5 mg\/kg<\/b>, <b>complementary experimental studies<\/b> (tunnel or field trials) are <b>triggered<\/b> to determine more realistic residue levels in honey. Studies can be conducted either with treated syrup (tunnel trials), to mime a worst-case transfer of residues from nectar to honey, or with treated attractive crops (tunnel or field trials).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For the first step, a list of the main agricultural crops in Europe which have melliferous capacity is included as appendix as a help for the determination if residues in honey are to be expected. For the latter steps, guidance on how to conduct the complementary experimental studies are included as appendices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The technical guidelines <b>will apply from 1 January 2020<\/b>. Therefore, it will apply to all MRL review according to Article 12 of Reg.
