This initiative is implemented through several strategies such as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal\/actions-being-taken-eu\/farm-fork_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Farm to Fork Strategy<\/b><\/a>\u201d and the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal\/actions-being-taken-eu\/eu-biodiversity-strategy-2030_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Biodiversity Strategy for 2030<\/b><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Why?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The increasing recurrence of droughts, floods, forest fires and new pests are a constant reminder that our food system is under threat and must become more sustainable and resilient. More recently the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the weakness of the globalised food systems, their lack of resilience, and the need to address them by becoming more sustainable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>5 key points<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Make sure Europeans get healthy, affordable and sustainable food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Tackle climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Protect the environment and preserve biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Fair economic return in the food chain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Increase organic farming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Farm to Fork Strategy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Targets<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Concerning the use of pesticides in agriculture:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><b>Reduce by 50%<\/b> the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 2030.<\/li>\n<li><b>Reduce by 50%<\/b> the use of more hazardous pesticides by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Concerning the excess of nutrients, a major source of air, soil and water pollution:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><b>Reduce nutrient losses by at least 50%<\/b>, while ensuring no deterioration on soil fertility.<\/li>\n<li><b>Reduce fertiliser use by at least 20%<\/b> by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Concerning antimicrobial resistance, leading to an estimated 33 000 human deaths in the EU each year (linked to the use of antimicrobials in animal and human health):<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><b>Reduce by 50% the sales of antimicrobials<\/b> for farmed animals and in aquaculture by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Concerning the organic farming:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><b>Reaching 25% of total agricultural land under organic farming<\/b> by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>How will the targets be reached?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Create a healthy food environment for an easier healthy and sustainable choice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Propose mandatory harmonised front-of-pack nutrition labelling for a healthy and sustainable diets choice by consumers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Reduce by half food waste per capita by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Invest in Research and Innovation related to food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture and environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; Promote the Global transition, by making European food famous for its sustainability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Also, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/12413-Sustainable-use-of-pesticides-revision-of-the-EU-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public consultation<\/a> is actually open for the future revision of the European rules on the sustainable use of pesticides.
