20 October 2021The EU Commission launched on 26 October 2021 until 23 November 2021, four consultations on draft acts as regards the revision of the current rules for the use of microorganisms in plant protection products.
These initiatives will:
– adapt Part II of the uniform principles for evaluating and authorising plant protection products to accommodate the characteristics of these microorganisms, as they are different to those of chemical substances,
– specify approval criteria for microbial active substances in Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 in order to reflect the particularities of these substances, which are different from chemical substances,
– adapt the current data requirements (in part B of the Annex to Regulation 284/2013) to accommodate the characteristics of the microorganisms in these products, as they are different to those of chemical active substances,
– adapt the current data requirements (in part B of the Annex to Regulation 283/2013) to accommodate the characteristics of the microorganisms in these products, as they are different to those of chemical active substances.
These adaptations of the current rules are in line with the EU’s ‘farm to fork’ strategy that aims at reducing dependency on chemical plant protection products, including by facilitating the placing on the market of biological alternatives such as microorganisms.
