The European Commission has published on 22 November 2023 an update of the guidance document SANTE/11312/2021 on analytical quality control and method validation procedures for pesticide residues analysis in food and feed. This second version updates the initial version in force since 01 January 2022, which itself replaced SANTE 12682/2019.
Main changes with respect to the previous version are:
- Paragraph C3 on sample processing has been reworded to emphasise that preferably the whole laboratory sample should be comminuted.
- Paragraph D15 has been rewritten to allow laboratories to carry out a confirmatory analysis in cases where the initial analysis does not provide unambiguous identification or does not meet the requirements of quantitative analysis, or in the case of analysis of unusual pesticide/matrix combinations. If the MRL is numerically exceeded, a confirmatory analysis of another analytical test portion is required in case of potential legal actions.
- Paragraphs E12 and E14 have been rewritten to focus on the reporting and interpreting of the results with respect to measurement uncertainty.
- In Appendix C, data regarding PT (proficiency testing)-derived bias results have been refreshed to support the example of the measurement uncertainty calculation in Approach 2.
- In the glossary (Appendix F), the terms “analytical test portion” and “analytical test sample” are introduced; they correspond to the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) definitions. The terms “absolute recovery” and “apparent recovery” are also introduced. It should be noted that the term “recovery”, as used in the document, refers to apparent recovery.
Furthermore, editorial improvements have been made and obvious errors have been corrected throughout the document.
The new version of the guidance will come into force on 01 January 2024.
